About Gandhigram Rural University
Gandhigram was born in 1947. A team of dedicated disciples and contemporaries of Mahatma Gandhiji, Dr.T.S.Soundaram and Dr.G.Ramachandran, developed Gandhigram, the home of many rural development programmes. The Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) was founded in 1956 with undying faith and deep devotion to Mahatma Gandhi’s revolutionary concept of ‘Nai Talim’ system of education. The dimension of research and extension were added to teaching during the course of time. This three-dimensional approach became a pioneering model which earned appreciation from all over the country. The work of the Institute invited national attention and the Government of India (Ministry of Education), on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission, conferred the status of a Deemed University on the Institute under Section (3) of the UGC Act of 1956, on 3rd August, 1976.
Started in a small way, the University has developed into a big educational complex, comprising seven different faculties, offering in all about fifty different programmes. It awards Doctoral, Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates through its seven academic faculties: Rural Development, Rural Social Sciences, Rural Oriented Sciences, English and Foreign Languages, Tamil, Indian Languages & Rural Arts, Rural Health & Sanitation, and, Agriculture & Animal Husbandry. It has, at present, about 2300 students and 125 teaching and 250 non-teaching staff. The programmes offered here have attracted students from abroad every year. The University was accredited with Five Star Status by NAAC, in February 2002.

Preamble
University Grants Commission aims to create professionally qualified graduates with a sound knowledge of their core disciplines and expertise in a concerned skill will have more openings in service, industry and self-employment sectors. Demand and scope for such professionally trained graduates are visible in the applied fields of almost all basic/core disciplines and faculties in the current changing global scenario and is likely to increase in the future. To meet this challenge, UGC would like to encourage incorporation of skill oriented and value added, add-on courses in colleges/Universities to be opted by students as a parallel sub-discipline while pursuing their degree level education. The objective of the scheme is to introduce career and market-oriented, skill enhancing add-on courses that have utility for job, self-employment and empowerment of the students.

Keeping the above, Rural Energy Centre of Gandhigram Rural Institute Deemed University proposed to offer an ADD ON COURSE -- Certificate Course in Energy Auditing with main focus on
- Enabling the students to appear the Energy Auditor / Manager Examination. (Syllabus is exactly matches the syllabus of the BEE)
- Providing Hands on Training to the students on Energy Auditing.
- Enabling the students on recent energy management issues on energy like UNFCC, Kyoto protocol, COP, CDM, PCF
