The Rurh Graduate School in Economics (RGS Econ) offers PhD programme with generous funding by the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia and by the supporting institutions (University of Bochum, Technical University of Dortmund, University of Duisburg-Essen and Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung). This guarantees that participation in the programme is free of tution fees and that a number of scholarships (1300 Euro per-month) can be offered. The maximum duration of a scholarship is three years. It is tax-free and enough to cover all costs of living. The language of the programme is English.
Requirements
An excellent academic record and a Master, diploma or equivalent degree in economics or related fields. Early-stage PhD students are also welcome to apply. A strong background in quantitative methods (proven by course work in mathematics and statistics) is necessary for a successful application. Your Master’s degree must be such that it can be regarded as equivalent to a German diplom. This requires a written thesis, written or oral final examinations, and at least two years of advanced course work. The RGS Econ does not accept applications from students who only have a Bachelor’s degree. For applicants without a German Abitur a GRE score (general test format) or a GMAT score or any other international accepted test that measures basic verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills would be very helpful. Typically candidates should score in the top 10% in the quantitative and analytical sections of the test. Not older than 28 years.
