Sociology - 1998 (Main) (Paper - I) Time Allowed : Three Hours                         Maximum Marks : 300

Candidates should attempt Questions 1 and 5 which are compulsory, and any three of the remaining questions selecting at least one question from each Section. All questions carry equal marks. SECTION A
1. Write short notes on any three of the following {each note should not exceed 200 words) :
(a) Value neutrality in social science

(b) Reliability of a sample

(c) Pattern variables    

(d) Caste as a class

2. "It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but on the contrary it is their social being that determines their consciousness." Examine Karl Marx's notion of mode of production in the light of this statement.

3. Analyse critically the functional theory of social stratification.

4. 'Socialisation is a process by which all of us acquire the culture that we transmit to the next generation. ' Elaborate the statement and discuss its various stages.

SECTION B
5. Write short notes on any three of the following (each note should not exceed 200 words) :
(a) Features of pre-industrial economic system

(b) Education and culture

(c) Vertical and horizontal mobility

(d) Religious pluralism

6. Examine social consequences of changes in technology. Illustrate your answer with examples from new productive processes and equipment.

7. Explain the concept of power. Distinguish between power and authority.

8. What are the structural conditions under which movements emerge ? Discuss with reference to anyone theory of genesis of social movements.
